John C. Williams Dory Shop
This dory shop was only one of seven in Shelburne in 1883 when it was built. It is two and a half storeys high and sits on a granite foundation. They built the famous Shelburne dories on the second storey and slid the boats out of the front double doors onto horse or oxen-drawn carts to be taken to the schooners. John Williams started his own business in 1880, after learning the boat building trade with Walter Etherington, who learned in the shop of Isaac Crowell, the inventor of the dory clip. Today dories continue to be built for sale in this only remaining dory shop, which is also a museum. Shelburne dories are unique as they use a clip to join two pieces of hardwood to join the floor frame to the side frame. The J.C. Williams Dory Shop Museum is managed for the Nova Scotia Museum.
