Cox's Store

This wooden Greek Revival building is three and a half storeys high, with a spiral at the peak. The spiral was added in 1995 when The Scarlet Letter was filmed in Shelburne. The store is one hundred sixty feet in length, and once served as George Cox's Store. The store, which opened in 1902, had a retail store with mail order department in addition. The store was the place of supply for the many fishermen who came into Shelburne, and also the headquarters for shipping, lumbering, fishing and shipbuilding. Today it is the home of Sandspit Art Gallery.
