Matthew Pendergass House

Built in 1783 for Matthew Pendergrass, this vernacular home is one and a half storeys, wood construction, with vinyl cladding. Although this house was built for Matthew Pendergrass, it was deeded to Richard Townsand Sr., a waterfront merchant, on December 12, 1783. He divided this house in half to share with his son. It is believed that the house was once used as a tavern and served also as a jail. Today it is a private residence. In the above photograph, the house is shown as it looked for the filming of "The Scarlet Letter" in 1994.
